Gary McMahon

On his way to work on Nov 21st, Gary McMahon died after being struck by a lorry turning at the junction at Clifton Street and the West Link.

In the Coroners Inquest it was reported that the Lorry had been fitted with safety devices that were not functional and the driver had been on a hands-free call at the time. The Coroner, Anne-Louise Toal, found that the driver had been "making the appropriate number of checks".

Gary was deeply loved by his family and a fanatical Manchester United fan.

A Ghost Bike was installed by local cycle campaigner John Wright, the third he has installed since 2011. After the inquest he highlighted the responsibility the Department for Infrastructure hold for the safety of cyclist on the roads: "It should be a critical part of our roads culture and our roads planning that cyclists should have some form of priority on the roads."

DfI gave a statement to BBC that "potential changes to the future road layout in the Clifton Street area will be considered" as part of the Glider Phase 2 scheme. No changes have since been made.
